SEATTLE’S COMMUNITY TECH BOARD VOICES SUPPORT FOR NET NEUTRALITY
Seattle, WA- Today the City of Seattle’s Community Technology Advisory Board (CTAB) submitted a comment to the FCC voicing strong support for net neutrality and the maintenance of broadband internet as a telecommunications service. The CTAB board, comprised of regional technologists, policy experts and community members advises the Seattle Mayor and City Council on technology-related issues of public interest. Its comment highlights the impact that a reclassification of broadband internet could have on Seattle’s various economic sectors, education and nonprofit providers, and underserved residents.
Mark DeLoura, CTAB board member and former Senior Advisor for Digital Media in the Obama Administration at the Office of Science & Technology Policy (OSTP) stated, “Our community believes in a fair and open Internet: one that encourages growth of the American innovation economy by ensuring that startups can compete on a level playing field, and that democratizes access so that those most in need are guaranteed the ability to access essential services and have their voices heard. The Internet is a vital, shared resource, and Title II classification gives the FCC the tools necessary to protect it.”
CTAB and the City of Seattle work closely on issues pertaining to technology policy and digital inclusion. Seattle CTO, Michael Mattmiller had the following to say regarding the City’s position: “Seattle has made great progress over the last three years increasing broadband competition, affordability, and choice. Net neutrality, which protects open and equitable access to the internet, is necessary to support equity, economic growth, job creation, education, and a better quality of life. Enforceable net neutrality rules ensure internet providers cannot disadvantage consumers or the startup companies driving Seattle’s growth.”
The board plans to submit a collection of impact statements from regional startups, businesses and social sector organizations in advance of the FCC comment response deadline on August 16th.
